Surge protectors look a lot like power strips, but not all power strips are search protectors. The power strip is essentially an extension cord with multiple outlets. When you connect a device to a power strip it’s like connecting it to the wall outlet, in terms of safety. But surge protectors have electronics built-in that help prevent power surges from damage and connected devices. Only surge protectors actually help protect your gadgets against power surges. You can however tell whether a power strip provides surge protection with just a few seconds of examination.
When shopping for a search protector look for words like “surge protection” or “suppression”. Power strips are cheaper than surge protectors. You will likely see information clearly advertised on a surge protector about the Joule energy rating. Surge protectors will also often have a protection light on them that lights up when they’re plugged in.
When it comes to expensive electronics like your TV and home theater system, using a surge protector is a good idea. But when you’re just plugging in a coffee maker or toaster a simple power strip is just fine.
