In many areas, heating your home is essential. For some homes, that would require above-ground oil tanks. If you have this type of oil tank in your home, how can you check to make sure it is working efficiently?
One reason your above-ground oil tank will stop working effectively is if it is damaged and has started leaking oil. Look out for these signs:
- Do you notice a strong smell of oil when you are in the vicinity of the oil tank?
- Look at the area the tank is sitting on. If it is placed on grass or vegetation, does it look discolored or dead?
Another thing that can damage the oil tank is a lack of support. Oil tanks are very heavy, so the legs that support them must be in good condition. Check them to see if they have any signs of rust or other damage. What about the tank itself, does it seem like the tank has been patched up in the past? You may notice patches of metal that are discolored which would indicate repair work has been done on it.
Maintaining an above-ground oil tank is essential as it will be out in all weathers. Try to prevent water from continuously dripping or snow and ice from building up on or around it. Remember that a leaking oil tank is not just a waste of money for you as the homeowner, but it also hurts the environment.
