Instead of sitting all day at a computer, if you work a desk job, surely it would be healthier to be standing at that desk, right? It’s a common assumption that it burns more energy to keep standing compared to sitting, and so standing every day while you work would make an impact on the energy you burn and help you to manage your body weight. But is it really effective? One journal conducted a study on 74 healthy people to find the answer, here is what they found:
- While sitting, subjects burned 80 calories/hour
- While standing, subjects burned 88 calories/hour
- While walking, subjects burned 210 calories/hour
So while making use of a standing desk has benefits, it has a low impact on physical fitness. If you work at a desk and are trying to manage your bodyweight, you may find a brief walk in your break to be far more effective.
