Whether you’re moving into a new space or going through a renovation, you’re going to need to figure out where all of your furniture is going to go, and the best place to start is your rugs. Once you know where these will go, you will already know a lot about how to arrange the rest of your furniture on top of it.
The living room is essentially all about the experience of sitting on your sofa or occasional chairs, so your rugs should add to this experience. Center the rug under your coffee table or between your chairs, and make sure it’s big enough to fit comfortably under all of the chairs, or in the space between them, so no legs stand at a different level.
If you’re not sure how big the rug needs to be, space out all the chairs for comfortable viewing or conversation, then measure the total space they take up or the space between them, then add or subtract a little extra so you know your rug will fit perfectly.
