Walking up and down a stair might seem like a simple matter, but it can be very dangerous for some people, such as elderly ones, young children, and those with impaired balance. In fact, there are many accidents every year due to falls down a flight of stairs.
So what can you do to minimize the risk to your family, whether you have elderly parents living with you or young children?
One of the first things you should make sure of is that you have sturdy railings. These need to be firmly attached to the wall so that they won’t give way if a lot of weight is put on them. They should also be free of splinters since a splinter could make someone flinch back and fall.
If you have carpet on your stair, it needs to be firmly attached. If not it can turn into a trip hazard. If there is no way to fix a loose carpet, you might be best off removing it completely.
