When it comes to wood-destroying insects, termites are probably by far the best known, and the most damaging insects that homeowners need to deal with. Termites can eat your home from the inside out, and unfortunately, they don’t leave a lot of obvious signs that they are at work. This doesn’t mean that it is impossible to protect yourself as a homeowner.

Your first step should be to prevent the termites from getting easy access to your home. If you have wood siding, it shouldn’t be close to the ground. You should also avoid storing firewood, wooden pallets or anything similar close to your home. These could function as a way for termites to get a foothold only to move into your home later. In the spring, you can spot termites swarming around lights, and this means that there is an active colony nearby, possibly already inside your walls. If you notice any such signs, contact an exterminator as soon as possible.
